Luxury with a Side Eye

Luxury with a Side Eye

The word luxury gets used quite freely these days. Put it on a label, add beautiful packaging, raise the price—and suddenly, we’re supposed to believe.

Well. A few questions are in order.

Welcome to Luxury with a Side Eye. I’m Lyn Sanders, owner and creative director of AG. Beautiful things are part of my business. Looking closely at how they’re made is part of my responsibility.

And joining me is Miss Fancy—the pearl-wearing peacock beside me. She appreciates a fabulous entrance, but she would also like to know how your luxury is going to hold up when the spotlight leaves.

Miss Fancy is a little bougie, particular about the details, and quite serious about getting her money’s worth.

Together, we’ll explore what makes something worth bringing into your wardrobe: quality materials, thoughtful construction, lasting style, and the pleasure of using something that serves you well.

Miss Fancy will supply the side eye and together we’ll share information that gives you something worth looking at.

So, what makes something luxurious?

The answer begins with the care in how it’s made. The quality of the materials. The attention to the details. The durability that allows a piece to remain useful and beautiful long after its first appearance.

Luxury should have a life beyond this season. A place in your wardrobe beyond whatever happens to be trending. It should be something you can wear, carry, enjoy, and care for over time—something that earns its place in your life.

Consider pearls. A beautiful strand can be worn today, passed to a daughter or granddaughter, and find its place in another woman’s story. With proper care, the beauty continues even as the styling changes and the meaning deepens.

There is something luxurious about that continuity: a piece that holds both beauty and memories, with room for more.

There is also a practical side to this conversation. Sometimes, paying more at the beginning means spending less over time. A well-made bag carried for years may offer better value than a succession of bags that need replacing. A beautifully constructed jacket can become the piece you reach for again and again.

The purchase price is only the beginning of the story. How often you use something, how well it holds up, and what it takes to care for it all contribute to its value.

Of course, a higher price does not guarantee any of those things.

And that is where the side eye comes in.

When something is called luxury, it deserves a closer look. How is the stitching finished? Is the lining substantial? Do the closures work smoothly? Does the garment fit well? Are the materials suited to how the piece will actually be used?

Beautiful packaging makes an impression. The product inside should continue to make one after the packaging is gone.

The side eye is that thoughtful pause before accepting the promise. It’s appreciating the beauty while asking whether the quality justifies the price. A little wit, a little scrutiny, and a healthy expectation that what you purchase should serve you well.

That same thoughtfulness shapes an approach to sustainability: choosing pieces you intend to keep, caring for them, repairing them when possible, and resisting the constant pressure to replace what still serves you.

Fast fashion encourages a quick turnover. Lasting quality gives you a reason to hold on.

Luxury with a Side Eye is a space for exploring those choices. Appreciating beauty, examining quality, and asking a few necessary questions along the way.

Because when you love beautiful things, you expect them to last.
